The municipal halls of the “Strawberry Fields of the Philippines” turned into a makeshift bakery last March 29, as employees and volunteers packed and distributed 11,000 slices of Valley Bread’s original recipe for the Strawberry Cake Fest.
Sourced directly from producers in the world-famous farm in barangay Betag and Longlong, Puguis, a total of 325kg of strawberry jam and 170kg of fresh strawberries were required to accomplish the monumental task.
Chief Operating Officer of Valley Bread, Nicolo Espadero, son of founder Eric Dion Espadero, shared that they were able to purchase the berries at ₱350 per kilo, a rate lower than what they normally pay.
Each slice featured a strawberry buttercake base, enclosed in Italian buttercream icing, and garnished with fresh strawberry slices and topped with white chocolate shavings.
Mayor Roderick Awingan, Vice Mayor Guiller Galwan, and the Sangguniang Bayan members donned baker’s caps and aprons to spearhead the ceremonial slicing and official tasting of the dessert.
Alongside this was the unveiling of the ‘Strawberry Triplet Cake,’ where the public had the chance to take a glimpse of a giant diorama of three strawberries in a basket, each symbolizing the words “Heart, Harvest, Harmony” from this year’s theme.
The display stands 9.8 ft wide, 9.8 ft long, and 4.9 ft high.
The town still holds the Guinness World Record for the largest strawberry shortcake, which was achieved on March 20, 2004, under the late Mayor Nestor Fongwan Sr.
The record-breaking cake weighed a total of 9,622.29 kg and measured 8.7 ft wide, 12.3 ft long, and 8.4 ft high.
