The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) recently gave a thumbs up to the leadership of the local government unit of La Trinidad, Benguet, for exerting exemplary effort to protect forest reservations in the valley.
The DENR handed the โGawad Gabay Kalikasan Awardโ to mayor Roderick Awingan during the culminating program of the Cordillera Environment Month at the agencyโs training center in Baguio City.
The valley has 156 hectares of communal forests spread in barangays Puguis (48 ha.), Alno (28 ha.), Shilan (44 ha.) and Alapang (36 ha.). The LGU has mapped out a comprehensive plan to ensure its protection from unlawful encroachment and degradation.
The environment department recognized Awingan โfor his visionary leadership, unwavering commitment and exemplary service in the preservation and protection of the communal forests and forest reserves of La Trinidad that serve as a cornerstone for a greener and more resilient municipality for future generations.โ
Engr. Paquito Moreno Jr., DENR regional executive director, signed the plaque of appreciation.
Awingan said the award is not his alone but for all stakeholders who collaborated for the forestsโ protection. โOur forests are critical to our rapidly urbanizing community. We should not let them be destroyed,โ he said.
