LT ACCEPTS DA-CAR'S CHALLENGE TO MULTIPLY SWINE

The municipal local government of La Trinidad gladly accepts the challenge by the Department of Agriculture-Cordillera represented by Arlene Sagayo, regional technical director for research and regulation to work on growing the P3.1 million-worth swine multiplier farm located at the municipality's demo farm in Barangay Alno.
Sagayo, during the turnover program on August 5, said the "repayment" of the farm to the Livestock Economic Enterprise Development (LEED) program of the DA is through the municipality’s efforts in multiplying the swine and disperse its piglets to local hog farmers.
The turned over swine multiplier farm is worth P3,100,000.00, which includes the construction of the building structure and 20 heads of gilt (young female pigs intended for breeding) and one boar (male pig).
Mayor Roderick Awingan said the municipal LGU is currently eyeing to establish a parallel body to work with the Municipal Agricultural and Fishery Council (MAFC)--the Municipal Agriculture Development Council--which aims to strengthen agricultural programs in the town.
"We accept the challenge to produce income out of the project. Our mandate is also how to sustain the program even if we are no longer in position," Awingan said.
Awingan also challenged the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist headed by Nida Organo to further expand the municipality's demo farm in Barangay Alno to feature the best practices by local farmers who became successful as livestock owners or vegetable farm owners.
Councilor Belmer Elis, the committee chair of agriculture and tourism, said the Sangguniang Bayan is currently tackling the livestock ordinance for the municipality. He said they would be working with the mayor in the creation of the municipal agriculture development council.
Also present during the turnover were Veterinary 1 Mark Anthony Padao and Bart Wallang of the Omag La Trinidad-Benguet.
In Benguet, the municipality of La Trinidad and the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian are the two beneficiaries of the LEED program by the DA-CAR. The program provides support to qualified institutions, including state universities and colleges (SUCs) and Farmers' Cooperatives and Associations (FCA), in developing livestock-based enterprises.
