ONWARDS A MASTERPLAN TO ADDRESS PERENIAL FLOODING IN THE VALLEY
Continuous coordination efforts are being conducted by the municipal officials of La Trinidad led by Mayor Roderick Awingan as they met with officials of the Department of Public Works and Highways-Cordillera led by Director Editha Babaran together with a team from the DPWH Central Office- Bureau of Design composed of Geologist II Frederico Dela Peña, Engineer III Mikhaela Andrea Tan, Engineer II Juan Paulo Mortel and Engineer II Leo Janry Revilla who joined the walk through on August 19 and are working with their local counterparts to create a suitable engineering design to address the perennial flooding at the Strawberry Farm and Bolo Creek area.
Awingan showed the areas affected by heavy flooding and the tributaries going to the Bolo Creek while Councilor Bart Baldas clarified on the status of the HDPE pipe project of the agency at the Bolo Creek, which was noted by the DPWH to be added in their proposed master plan.
The personnel from the central office asked if there are no problems when it comes to trash at the Bolo Creek and tributaries leading to the creek, which was affirmed by the mayor stating that there are consistent binnadang clearing efforts being conducted by the barangays, volunteers, and the MLGU at the canals and waterways of the municipality.
“What we really need is an engineering design and intervention that will solve our flooding problem,” Awingan said.
The mayor reiterated on the importance of a long-term plan to be put into action in order to ease the burden of the farmers and residents living at the swamp area and for the future generation.
Benguet 1st District Engineering Office Head Teofilo Ramirez said they will work continuously with the central office staff to provide them the necessary data in order to come up with an engineering design for the flood-prone area.
Also present during the walk through and meeting were councilors Teddy Walang, Jonie Puroc, and Jayson Dangwa.
More coordination with the DPWH and the municipal LGU will be expected in the coming days to pursue the needed and necessary engineering interventions that will work for the long-term.
