Eight teams of Grade 12 STEM students from Benguet National High School (BeNHS) took their classroom inventions to the halls of the local government in response to local challenges.

Presenting their capstone projects to the municipal heads yesterday, March 24, at the Conference Room, the learners featured a diverse mix of prototypes, ranging from disaster mitigation to sustainable energy, and eco-friendly initiatives:

Automation and Safety

  • Automated Testing Laboratory Assistant System (ATLAS)

  • Seismic Operate Gate: An Accelerometer-based Approach to Automated Gate Operation

Environmental Engineering and Sustainability

  • Flood Level Observation and Organized Drainage Disposal (F.L.O.O.D.) System

  • Winterbine: Wind-Water Turbine as an Alternative Source of Energy

  • Atmospheric Water Harvesting Technology: Generating Continuous Sustainable Water

  • Development of a Small-Scale Anaerobic Digester with Sodium Hydroxide Filtration for Combustible Methane Production

Green Innovations

  • Sustainable Paper Bricks from Used Paper Meal Boxes and Paper Cups

  • Formulation and Comparative Evaluation of Plantable Eco-Paper Integrated with Snake Plant (Dracaena Trifasciata) Pulp

Research Advisers Maria Lourdes Ong and Ruffa Joy Romero shared that these projects reflect the youth’s capability to contribute meaningful, evidence-based solutions to the town’s development, observing that most are original ideas based on the students’ experiences, and a handful of the designs are continuations from previous batches.

Yoshio Labi (DRRMO), Dwight Daodao (GSO), Engr. Vicente Perez (MPDO), Nida Organo (OMAG), Arthur Pedro (MENRO), and Atty. Delmar Cariño (MO) applauded the learners’ efforts while raising practical considerations for potential implementation.

Mayor Roderick Awingan personally commended all eight teams for their diligence and sincere efforts in alleviating La Trinidad’s burgeoning problems.

A capstone research project bridges students’ academic learning with practical, real-life problem-solving abilities.
